Invert It! Simply Safe Inversions

This yoga class awakens and strengthens the upper core to help you practice simply safe inversions such as standing forward bends, downward facing dog, and bridge pose.

In this class you will flow through a yoga sequence to warm up and strengthen the body. You will learn three (3) yoga skills to prepare you to safely perform simple inversions. You do not need to know how to do an inversion or even practice inversions to learn how to safely perform an inversion.

Three yoga skills you acquire during this class:

  • Strengthen and align the arms, shoulders, and upper core.
  • Increase abdominal strength to support the lower back.
  • Lengthen and strengthen the leg muscles to create lift in inversions.

Inversions are essential to support the lymph system. Unlike the circulatory system, where the heart pumps oxygenated blood to the cells of the body and returns deoxygenated blood to the lungs, the lymph system does not have a direct pump to transport the lymph and white blood cells around the body. Hence, inversions assist in the circulation of  the lymph and white blood cells throughout the body.

Physical Benefits

  • Improved Circulation: Inversions use gravity to stimulate venous blood flow back to the heart, which improves overall circulation and helps lower the heart rate. This also increases the flow of oxygenated blood to the brain, which enhances cognitive function and mental clarity.
  • Strengthens Muscles: Poses like headstands and handstands require engaging the core, shoulders, arms, and legs to maintain stability and balance. This isometric engagement builds strength and stability throughout the body.
  • Spinal Health and Pain Relief: Inverting the body provides a gentle decompression of the spine, which can help relieve tension and lower back pain caused by prolonged sitting or poor posture.
  • Stimulates Lymphatic System: The change in gravity helps stimulate the lymphatic system, which is crucial for flushing out toxins and supporting immune function.
  • Aids Digestion: Inversions can help move waste materials through the digestive tract with the assistance of gravity, which aids digestion.

Mental and Emotional Benefits

  • Calms the Nervous System: Inversions have a calming effect on the nervous system, which helps reduce stress, anxiety, and symptoms of depression. They can also improve sleep quality.
  • Boosts Confidence and Overcomes Fear: The practice of inversions challenges practitioners to step out of their comfort zone, cultivate patience, and build a sense of empowerment as they master new poses.
  • Improves Focus and Perspective: Balancing upside down requires intense concentration, which helps tune out distractions and improve overall focus. The new physical perspective can also lead to a new mental perspective, helping to break rigid thought patterns.
  • Energizes and Elevates Mood: The rush of blood and oxygen to the brain can provide an invigorating effect, boosting energy levels and releasing mood-enhancing hormones like endorphins

Healing Injury? For those who have a history of injury or trauma and notice that the effects of the minor/major injuries are beginning to interfere with your everyday lives, please note that all of the yoga classes are naturally healing.

Each yoga class is designed to help release stored pain, anxiety, stress, or tension you may be experiencing so that vital, healing energy – prana – can move freely through the entire body. When vital energy is flowing freely (not obstructed), you experience positive emotions, revitalized energy, mental clarity, lightness, pain relief, and an overall sense of well-being.
