Understanding Upper Back and Thoracic Curvatures

Come join us for this wonderful yoga practice designed to make you feel light and free!

The health of the central nervous system is directly linked to the well-being and upward alignment of the spinal column.

Realigning the upper back muscles and thoracic spinal column may be achieved as a positive-evolution (at any age), that is positively determined by our yoga practice.

Oftentimes we need to start at the outer sheath of the body to loosen and stretch the more superficial fascia to liberate underlying muscular layers. When the fascia and outer muscular layers are freed, the deepest-lying elements of the body – the bones and spinal vertebrae – can find their proper alignment and exercise their appropriate function which includes physical and emotional health, as well as creating span and balance for the fascia and musculature attachment.

This is where the body get complex. As some muscles in the upper back can shorten on one side and not the other, causing asymmetry and tightness to occur on only one side of the body.

Understanding Upper Back and Thoracic Curvatures

Asanas:  This yoga practice explores ways to attain alignment, curvature, and elasticity in the upper back and thoracic spinal column to bring about:

  • Elasticity and release of tightness in the upper back muscles and thoracic spinal column
  • Relaxation in the fascia and the musculature of the upper back
  • Strength, flexibility, and power in the upper back, shoulders, and arms
  • Deeper breath in the lungs and diaphragm
  • Ease of movement
  • Increased energy and vitality

The key to keeping the postures safe is to practice with awareness, alignment, and gentleness. We incorporate the yoga yama, ahimsa  – (nonviolence = do no harm) so that we do not go too deep, too quickly –  into the postures.
